Upholstery vinyl is a man-made material, usually a PVC coating bonded to a knitted or woven fabric backing. The coating gives it a smooth, leather-like surface that wipes clean and resists water, while the backing adds strength and a little stretch for wrapping seats and panels. That mix of toughness and easy care is why vinyl is a common choice for chairs, booths and benches that see daily use.
Not exactly. PVC is the plastic, and vinyl is the finished upholstery fabric made with it. Most upholstery vinyl is a PVC layer on a fabric backing, which is why shops often use the two words for the same thing. The backing is the difference: it makes vinyl material softer, stronger and easier to stitch and staple than a plain PVC sheet.
