It depends on the use. Tight, flat weaves in polycotton or polyester handle daily family use and pet claws best, because there are no loops to snag. Velvet and chenille suit pieces that are looked at more than they are climbed on. Vinyl wipes clean and suits kitchens, clinics and commercial seating. Kehls carries all of these, so the fabric can be matched to the room rather than to a trend.
Upholstery fabric is sold by the metre and the price moves with the fibre, the weave and the width. A basic polycotton sits at one end, imported velvets and specialist technical fabrics at the other. Because it is sold by the metre rather than in packs, a small job such as a pair of dining chairs uses very little, and a branch can quote once they know the piece being covered.
There is no single name. It is grouped by construction: velvet, chenille, jacquard, damask, tapestry, boucle, corduroy and canvas are all upholstery fabrics. Trade terms for the fabric itself are decor fabric, furnishing fabric and upholstery cloth. Technical or industrial fabric is a separate group covering vinyl, tarpaulin, ripstop and automotive materials, made for hard wear rather than for looks.
