Velvet is a woven fabric with a short, dense pile standing up from the base cloth, which gives it that soft handle and the way the colour shifts as light moves across it. Upholstery velvet is woven heavier than dress velvet so it stands up to daily use. The Kehls range runs from the smooth pile of Deluxe through to the deeper tones of Moulin Rouge.
It sits above plain woven upholstery fabric and below leather, and the spread within velvet itself is wide. Fibre content and pile density are what move the price: a dense pile in a rich colour costs more than a light, loosely woven one. Because velvet is sold by the metre, a pair of scatter cushions or a single headboard costs very little next to covering a whole sofa.
The pile shows pressure marks and shading where it has been sat on or brushed the wrong way, which some people like and others do not. It holds dust and pet hair more than a flat weave, so it wants regular vacuuming with a soft brush. Spills should be blotted rather than rubbed, because rubbing crushes the pile and leaves a permanent flat patch.
Dress velvet is, but upholstery velvet is a different fabric. Upholstery velvet is woven heavier, with a denser pile and a stiffer backing, so it survives years of sitting. That same construction makes it too rigid to hang and drape well on the body. The velvet ranges at Kehls are made for sofas, headboards, scatters and accent chairs rather than for garments.
