Block Out fabrics are versatile and can be layered behind sheer or decorative curtains for a polished, functional finish. Popular applications include:
Corduroy is a woven fabric with raised parallel ridges, called wales, running down its length. The ridges are cut pile, which is why it feels soft but wears like a workwear fabric. Wale count decides the look: a wide wale reads as chunky and casual, a fine wale as smarter and more formal. Upholstery corduroy is woven heavier than the version used for trousers.
It takes more yarn and more weaving time than a flat fabric, because the pile has to be woven in and then cut to form every ridge. Wider wales use more material again. Against other upholstery fabrics it sits in the middle rather than at the top, and buying it by the metre keeps a small job such as a bench seat or a set of scatters affordable.
The name most likely comes from cord du roy, an old description of a ridged cloth, though the fabric as we know it was developed in the English cotton mills rather than in France. The cord part is the reliable bit: the whole identity of the fabric is those raised cords running down the face. In some countries it is still called simply cord.
It is widely called cord, and in older references needlecord, pincord or elephant cord, depending on how wide the ridges are. Needlecord and pincord have fine, closely spaced wales. Elephant cord has broad, deep ones. Corduroy and cord mean the same thing, so a fabric listed under either name is the same construction, and the wale width is what changes the look.
