FAQs

What is tarpaulin used for?

Tarpaulin covers and protects things that live outside: truck and trailer loads, stacked materials on site, patio blinds, awnings, boat and machinery covers, and temporary shelter. PVC tarpaulin is the heavier option, welded or eyeleted rather than sewn, and it stays waterproof under sustained rain and sun where lighter woven covers eventually let water through at the seams.

A cheap tarp is usually woven polyethylene with a thin laminate, which tears at the eyelets and goes brittle after a season in the sun. PVC tarpaulin is a woven base coated on both sides with PVC, so it is heavier, stays flexible, and can be welded into a sealed seam. It costs more at the outset and lasts through several seasons of weather.

Yes. Buying tarpaulin fabric off the roll rather than as a finished sheet is how custom covers are made, because ready-made tarps only come in fixed sizes that rarely match a trailer, a patio or a piece of machinery. Kehls supplies PVC tarpaulin by the metre, so a cover can be made to the exact dimensions of whatever it has to fit.

Wash it with mild soapy water and a soft brush, rinse properly and let it dry completely before folding, because storing it damp is what causes mildew spotting. Avoid solvents and harsh cleaners, which strip the PVC coating and leave the base fabric exposed. Fold along different lines each time rather than the same creases, since repeated folding in one place is where cracking starts.
